For the past 10 years our Freedom Schools program has been hosted in school buildings across Seattle's Southend. But this summer, due to school closures for construction, we no longer have access to a building. So Summer 2026 Freedom Schools is going Back to Its Roots - bringing summer learning, joy, and resources directly into the neighborhoods where our families live.
When the original Freedom Schools began in 1964, learning didn’t happen in traditional classrooms. It happened in parks, churches, basements, and wherever communities could gather. Organizers created joyful, liberatory spaces with whatever they had.
This year, we’re leaning into that legacy.
We will be hosting weekly pop-up events across Rainier Beach that center resource distribution, community building, critical literacy and social action activities that make Freedom Schools so powerful. Your gift will directly support meals, books, resources, and giveaways for Freedom Schools families in Rainier Beach.
Here is what your GIVE BIG dollars look like in action:
$10 - Supplies fresh produce & groceries for one family
$50 - Provides fresh produce & groceries for five families
$150 - Secures Fresh produce bags, hot meals, & book giveaways for 10 families
$500 - Powers one full pop-up event: bringing food, books, joy, and connection to scholars and their families.
When spaces close, community opens.
